Project Overview

Power Projects was engaged to deliver a Relay Coordination and Protection Study for a water facilities infrastructure upgrade project as part of a broader electrical system validation program.

The objective was to verify protection system performance prior to commissioning, ensuring faults could be isolated selectively without impacting the wider electrical network or critical water operations. The engagement also included validation of compliance requirements and detailed system studies using ETAP.

Project Scope

The study covered the substation and downstream distribution network supplying key water infrastructure assets.

Utility incomer feeders
11 kV switchgear
Transformers
Bus couplers
Outgoing feeders
Motor feeders
Capacitor banks
Auxiliary distribution systems

The project involved a combination of system studies, relay coordination assessment, and protection verification to support reliable operation under both normal and fault conditions.

Engineering Services Delivered

Power Projects completed a detailed assessment of the protection system across multiple voltage levels and equipment types.

Short Circuit Verification

Assessment of fault levels across the network to verify equipment ratings and confirm short circuit performance under all fault types.

TCC Analysis & Relay Grading

Time-current coordination analysis and relay grading to ensure selective fault clearance across incomers, feeders, transformers, and motors.

Relay Setting Calculations

Development of relay settings for all protection functions including overcurrent, earth fault, differential, and motor protection.

Coordination & Fault Isolation Verification

Review of upstream and downstream protection coordination and verification of fault detection and isolation capability across the network.

Protection Functions Reviewed

Overcurrent Earth Fault Directional Differential Restricted Earth Fault Voltage Frequency Motor Protection

Key Project Challenges

A major focus of the project was maintaining selective protection coordination across the network while minimising the risk of unnecessary system-wide outages.

Multi-Layer Protection Coordination

The electrical system involved multiple protection layers across utility interfaces, substations, feeders, transformers, motors, and capacitor bank installations requiring detailed validation.

Continuity of Critical Operations

Faults needed to be isolated correctly while maintaining continuity of service for critical water infrastructure with zero tolerance for unnecessary supply interruptions.

Scope Expansion During Execution

Additional engineering support was required following expansion of the original study scope and additional protection review requirements during project execution.

Technical Approach

Power Projects developed a detailed ETAP model representing the network configuration, equipment characteristics, and operating conditions. An iterative engineering approach was adopted to ensure stable and selective operation across a range of conditions.

Project Outcomes

The completed study supported coordinated protection operation across the electrical network and improved selectivity between incomers and feeders.

Coordinated protection operation across the entire electrical network

Improved selectivity between incomers and feeders

Reduced risk of nuisance tripping for critical water operations

Strengthened protection coverage for critical equipment

Verified fault isolation strategy for the upgraded system

Smoother system energisation with reduced protection-related risks

Supporting Infrastructure Reliability

Reliable protection systems are essential in utility-linked infrastructure environments where continuity of service is critical.

This project demonstrated the importance of validating protection performance across multiple operating scenarios, maintaining coordination between different protection layers, and verifying overall system behaviour through detailed engineering studies.

Through this engagement, Power Projects supported improved operational reliability and safer system performance for critical water infrastructure.
