Power Projects Successfully Completes Power System Verification Study for a Critical Oil & Gas Facility
We are pleased to announce the successful completion of a Power System Verification Study conducted by Power Projects for a critical industrial facility in the Oil & Gas sector.
The study was undertaken to verify the electrical system design for safety, reliability, equipment adequacy, protection coordination, and compliance with applicable IEC and industry standards.
About the Study
The verification covered a 415 V low-voltage power distribution system comprising gas engine generators, an emergency diesel generator, normal and emergency LV switchgear, motor feeders and UPS systems.
The assessment focused on validating the existing electrical design and power system study results against equipment ratings, operating conditions, protection requirements and applicable standards.
Study Covered
- Power system configuration verification
- Load flow study review
- Short circuit study review
- Motor starting study review
- Relay coordination verification
- Arc flash study review
- Generator and switchgear rating verification
- Cable sizing and voltage drop verification
- Protection and interlocking verification
- LV SLD verification
- UPS system verification
- Compliance assessment against applicable IEC standards
Key Findings
The verification confirmed that the major electrical equipment and systems were operating within their specified design limits.
The assessment verified that generator loading and short-circuit withstand capabilities were adequate, while protection functions were appropriately coordinated to support system selectivity and safe fault isolation.
Cable assessments also confirmed that current-carrying capacity and voltage drop were within permissible limits, with the assessed voltage drop remaining below 3%.
Key Outcomes
The study provided valuable engineering validation of the electrical system, confirming:
- Adequate equipment ratings
- Reliable generator and emergency power configuration
- Proper protection coordination
- Compliance with applicable IEC requirements
- Adequate cable sizing and voltage performance
- Safe and reliable operation of the electrical system
The study also identified practical recommendations related to SOPs, emergency shutdown, cable installation, earth-fault protection and arc-flash PPE to further enhance operational safety.
