Power Projects has been awarded an Arc Flash Analysis assignment for a 206.25 MW utility-scale solar power project, supporting electrical safety assessment across the facility's transmission and distribution network.

The project involves a comprehensive evaluation of arc flash hazards across the solar generation facility, including the 220 kV pooling substation and the complete 33 kV solar collection system.

As part of the assignment, Power Projects will perform ETAP-based arc flash simulations, conduct site data collection, prepare engineering deliverables, and provide arc flash safety training for operating personnel.

This project further strengthens Power Projects' experience in delivering electrical safety engineering solutions for large-scale renewable energy developments.

Project Overview

The 206.25 MW solar power plant is connected through a 220 kV pooling substation.

Power Projects will carry out a detailed Arc Flash Analysis to assess electrical hazards across the complete network, determine incident energy levels, and establish safe working boundaries for maintenance activities.

The scope also includes field data collection and arc flash safety training to support safer operation and maintenance practices throughout the facility.

Project Scope

The Arc Flash Analysis covers the following key activities:

  • Site data collection

  • Arc flash label preparation
  • PPE recommendation

The study covers electrical systems across both the pooling substation and solar plant network.

220 kV Pooling Substation

The assessment includes:

  • 220 kV main busbars
  • 220/33 kV, 110 MVA power transformers
  • ABT metering panels

Solar Plant Electrical Network

The assessment includes:

  • 33 kV outdoor MV panel boards
  • 12.5 MVA inverter transformers
  • Auxiliary transformers
  • Inverter control panels
  • Complete AC collection network

Delivering Arc Flash Assessment for Utility-Scale Solar Facilities

Large renewable energy facilities include extensive electrical networks that require appropriate safety assessment to support safe maintenance activities.

Through this project, Power Projects will evaluate arc flash hazards across electrical locations within the facility and provide engineering recommendations including:

  • Incident energy assessment
  • Arc flash boundary determination
  • Equipment-specific arc flash labels
  • PPE recommendations
  • Safety-related engineering documentation

The study will support improved electrical safety awareness and safer maintenance planning for plant personnel.

Engineering Approach

Power Projects will execute the Arc Flash Analysis using ETAP 22.5/24.

The project methodology includes:

Input Review and ETAP Model Development

The scope includes:

  • Development of an ETAP electrical network model
  • Validation of substation and solar plant electrical data
  • Review of transformer, inverter and switchgear parameters
  • Verification of operating configurations for normal and maintenance conditions

Site Data Collection and Network Assessment

Detailed site data collection will include:

  • Verification of installed electrical equipment
  • Switchgear and transformer nameplate validation
  • Protective device information
  • Cable and network configuration review
  • Operating mode verification

The collected information will be incorporated into the ETAP simulation model to support the analysis.

Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

The Arc Flash Study will include:

  • Determination of system operating modes
  • Bolted fault current calculations
  • Equipment enclosure and conductor gap assessment
  • Working distance evaluation
  • Arcing current calculations
  • Arc duration determination
  • Incident energy calculations
  • Arc flash boundary determination
  • PPE recommendations in accordance with NFPA 70E
  • Preparation of equipment-specific arc flash labels

Arc Flash Safety Training and Deliverables

Along with the engineering study, Power Projects will provide Arc Flash Safety Training covering:

  • Fundamentals of arc flash hazards
  • Electrical safety awareness
  • Incident energy interpretation
  • PPE selection and application
  • Safe approach boundaries
  • Understanding arc flash labels

The training will help improve operational awareness and promote safer electrical maintenance practices.

Project Timeline

3-Week

The complete Arc Flash Analysis, site data collection, and safety training will be delivered within a 3-week schedule upon receipt of the purchase order and complete project inputs.
