We’re excited to share that another large-scale renewable project has cleared its CTU grid compliance milestone with our support.

grid compliance

Power Projects was the consulting partner for the complete grid compliance study of a 1200 MW Solar PV project in Rajasthan, connected to the national grid at 400 kV FBTL pooling station.
This project was unique in its scale and technical requirements, especially with the integration of STATCOM to meet CEA’s interconnection and reactive power mandates.

Project Configuration

  • Total export capacity: 1200 MW (4 blocks × 300 MW each)
  •  STATCOM: 368 MVAr (92 MVAr per 300 MW block)

Scope of Study
We conducted a comprehensive set of simulations using PSS®E v35.6 and PSCAD v5.0.2 to cover:

  • Load flow and reactive power compensation
  • Short circuit and fault-level assessment
  • Voltage and frequency ride-through capability
  • Harmonic, flicker, and DC injection study
  • Dynamic simulation of STATCOM response and fault conditions

Engineering Challenges

  • Coordinating four independent 300 MW blocks with shared interconnection
  • Ensuring reactive power support and grid voltage compliance during fault ride-through
  • Managing power quality issues due to high inverter counts
  • Validating STATCOM performance under multiple grid fault scenarios

Solution Implemented

  • Integrated 368 MVAr STATCOM to maintain dynamic voltage support and reactive power balance at POI
  • Designed 33 kV harmonic filter banks to contain voltage THD within IEEE-519:2022 limits
  • Simulated and tuned the STATCOM for rapid response to unsymmetrical and symmetrical faults
  • Verified compliance with ±10%/min ramp rate, LVRT/HVRT curves, and power factor at 0.95 lagging
  • Ensured transformer loading and voltage profile remained within acceptable limits under N-1 conditions

Outcome
The project has now been approved by CTU after submission of all steady-state, power quality, and dynamic performance reports—along with validated PSCAD models.
