Power Projects Awarded Electrical Power System Studies for 132 kV Grid Project in Oman
Power Projects has been awarded additional Electrical Power System Studies for a 132 kV grid infrastructure project in Oman. The assignment brings together six dedicated grid compliance assessments, covering electromagnetic transient performance, system strength, reactive power and power factor, voltage unbalance, voltage disturbance ride-through, protection compliance, transformer inrush and load-step performance. The complete network will be modelled and analysed using DIgSILENT PowerFactory, providing a common engineering platform for the study package and the preparation of six dedicated technical reports.
Project Scope
The awarded study package includes:
- EMT Study and System Strength Assessment
- Reactive Power and Power Factor Compliance Study
- Voltage Unbalance Compliance
- Voltage Disturbance Ride-Through Compliance
- Protection Coordination and Protection System Compliance
- Inrush and Load Step Compliance
The studies will assess the electrical network across electromagnetic transient; steady-state, voltage quality, disturbance, protection and system operating conditions defined within the project scope.
Network Modelling and Input Validation
A detailed DIgSILENT PowerFactory model will be developed using the available project inputs.
Power Projects will review and validate the electrical data before executing the studies. The network representation will cover the requirements of the six compliance assessments.
As defined in the project modelling criteria, LV loads at 0.415 kV and outgoing feeders from panels or switchgear with incomer ratings below 630 A will be represented as lumped loads.
This model will provide the common basis for the subsequent technical assessments and compliance reporting.
Six Dedicated Compliance Assessments
EMT Study and System Strength Assessment
The EMT and system strength assessment will evaluate the electrical network from an electromagnetic transient perspective. The study will assess network behaviour where fast electrical phenomena and system strength can influence overall grid performance.
A dedicated EMT Study and System Strength Assessment Report will document the simulations, observations and engineering assessment.
Reactive Power and Power Factor Compliance Study
The project includes a dedicated assessment of reactive power and power factor performance. The study will evaluate whether the network satisfies the required reactive power and power factor operating requirements under the applicable project conditions.
The results will be documented in the Reactive Power and Power Factor Compliance Study Report.
Voltage Unbalance Compliance
Voltage unbalance will be assessed as a separate compliance requirement within the study package. The assessment will evaluate the network against the applicable project requirements, with the findings documented in a dedicated Voltage Unbalance Compliance Report.
Voltage Disturbance Ride-Through Compliance
The voltage disturbance ride-through assessment will examine network performance during defined voltage disturbance conditions. The study will evaluate the system response and determine its compliance with the applicable ride-through requirements.
The results will be documented in a dedicated Voltage Disturbance Ride-Through Compliance Report.
Protection Coordination and Protection System Compliance
The protection assessment will cover:
- Protection coordination
- Protection system performance
- Compliance of the protection arrangement with project requirements
- Identification of protection-related concerns based on the study results
The findings will be consolidated into the Protection Coordination and Protection System Compliance Report.
Inrush and Load Step Compliance
The study package also covers system behaviour during inrush and load-step events. These events can introduce sudden changes in current, active power, reactive power and voltage conditions within the electrical network.
The assessment will determine system performance during these operating events and document the results in a dedicated Inrush and Load Step Compliance Report.
Six Technical Study Reports
The six assessments will result in the following dedicated technical deliverables:
- EMT Study and System Strength Assessment Report
- Reactive Power and Power Factor Compliance Study Report
- Voltage Unbalance Compliance Report
- Voltage Disturbance Ride-Through Compliance Report
- Protection Coordination and Protection System Compliance Report
- Inrush and Load Step Compliance Report
The six reports will address the defined compliance requirements while using the common network model developed for the project.
8-Week Delivery Schedule
The complete study package covers six separate compliance assessments across EMT performance, system strength, reactive power, voltage behaviour, protection and system operating events.
The project will be delivered within an 8-week schedule from commencement, subject to receipt of the required project inputs and approved agreement.
Supporting 132 kV Grid Infrastructure in Oman
Transmission projects require coordinated assessment of electrical performance across multiple operating and compliance requirements.
Through this assignment, Power Projects will support the 132 kV grid infrastructure development in Oman through:
- EMT performance assessment
- System strength evaluation
- Reactive power and power factor compliance
- Voltage unbalance assessment
- Voltage disturbance ride-through verification
- Protection coordination and compliance
- Inrush and load-step performance assessment
- Grid compliance support for 132 kV transmission infrastructure
The coordinated study package brings these assessments together through a common DIgSILENT PowerFactory network model and six dedicated technical reports.
