Grid Impact Assessment study for Sierra Leone.

POWER PROJECTS has successfully completed the Grid Impact Assessment study for Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone is a country in West Africa, on the Atlantic Ocean. The capital and largest city of this country is Freetown. Sierra Leone’s #power sector is less than 150MW of operational capacity that consists of a mix of #hydropower, thermal (steam, gas and diesel) and solar generation.

PROJECT DETAILS

The study was carried out to analyse the impact of #grid due to the proposed addition of western area power generation plant(92MW) and the proposed expansions in transmission and distribution system.

We have carried out detailed Grid code compliance studies of the entire country, that consists of Load flow studies, short circuit studies, Harmonics Studies and System Stability Studies in ETAP – Operation Technology, Inc. and DIgSILENT GmbH. The studies brought out important observations and based on this, we gave appropriate recommendations for the system improvements that include enhancement of system transformation capacity, change in system configurations to limit the short circuit currents and the communication based load management.

The existing network of Sierra Leone has major #generators located away from the load centre and that was one of the key challenges faced to analyse the stability of the system. However, the project team diligently carried out the studies for various system scenarios that brought out important findings.
